Foxconn's acquisition of Luxgen sounds like an old brand trying to make a "comeback through electrification."

This time, Foxconn spent nearly NT$800 million to bring Luxgen fully under its wing. For Foxconn, this is not just a transaction, but more like filling in the key piece of its car-making puzzle. Previously, Foxconn focused on EV research and production, like a "behind-the-scenes expert," and now with Luxgen, it can finally step into the spotlight and face consumers directly.

Many people's impression of Luxgen may still be stuck on those fuel consumption jokes from a few years ago that made people laugh and cry. Indeed, this brand had its moment in the spotlight, but later almost disappeared from the mainland China market. However, its sales channels and after-sales service network in Taiwan, China, are still intact, which is exactly what Foxconn values most.

The Model C that Foxconn previously launched was sold under the Luxgen badge and even set a local EV sales record. This shows that the two companies already had a foundation for cooperation. Now that they have become one family, coordination should be even smoother.

After the acquisition, Foxconn's plan is quite clear: in regions where it does not yet have partners, it will first use the Luxgen brand to "scout ahead," cultivate the market, and hand it over to partners once the time is right. This move is quite pragmatic, avoiding direct competition while slowly expanding its own network.

However, the challenges are also significant. Making cars and selling cars are two different things. Foxconn is strong in manufacturing, but brand operations and marketing still need to be explored gradually. The Luxgen brand needs to be polished anew and reverse everyone's past stereotypes, which is no small undertaking.

Quick take:

Overall, this acquisition is a microcosm of consolidation in the EV industry. Whether the "revival" story of an old brand leveraging new technology can be written well remains to be seen. At least, there is now one more new player in the market worth watching.
